Drepung Losel Ling Monastery, one of the three great monastic universities of Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism, which was originally established in Tibet way back in 1416 AD by Archarya Lekden, a great disciple of Jamyang Choeje. Due to political upheaval in the aftermath of Chinese invasion over Tibet in 1959, a large number of monks including the ones from this original monastery fled Tibet to seek asylum in India.
In the late 60’s this monastery was reestablished in south India where it is currently located to provide traditional Buddhist program. Since its inception in Tibet, it has received aspiring students from not only from different parts of Tibet but also from many from its neighbouring countries including India, Bhutan, Nepal, China, Mongolia etc. Even today, Indians particularly from the Himalayan belts make up about 20% of the total monk population of this monastery.
